WHY WE WEAR PRAYER SHAWLS
Numbers 15:38-41 "Speak to the sons of Israel and command them that make TZITZIT (fringes) on the corners of their garments throughout all their generations, and that they put in the TZITZIT of the corner a thread of TECHELEIS (blue), and it shall be a TZITZIT for you, so that you may look upon it and remember all the Commandments of HaShem to do them, so that you do not seek after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you used to going whoring. So that you will remember and do all My Commandments and be holy unto your God. I am HaShem your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God, I am HaShem your God."
OF Course we are not commanded by God to wear the prayer shawl now, because we are now covered and united with him through our Lord Jesus Christ. We use the prayer shawl to set aside a private time with God. By wearing the shawl, it reminds us of our Blood covering which came through the sacrifice of our big brother.
In the old Testament times the men were instructed to wear the Tallit all the time under their clothing. Aren't we lucky to know that our covering is also with us all the time. Even though we may not see Jesus but he has told us in Hebrews 13:5 "I will never leave you or forsake you."
Malachi 4:2 :"But unto you that fear my name shall the Son of Righteousness shall arise with healing in his wings" . When the prayer shawl was placed over the head it forms a tent. The WINGS of the garment was formed when the arms are held out. For that reason the corners of the shawl are called wings. The knotted fringes and the wings (Tzitzit) were believed to have possessed healing powers. No wonder the women with the issue of blood sought to touch the hem of Jesus' prayer garment (wings) instead of his head or arms. Matt 9:20
It is customary to stretch the Tallit before you, holding it with both hands and recite this blessing before you begin your prayers. It was so holy that the prayer was put around the neck.
"Blessed are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe. Who he has sanctified us with His commandments and commended us to wrap ourselves in the tzitzit.
This was done to help them remember how sacred and holy this garment is. It holds the Tzitzit which represents the WORD of God and through the word brings healing in our body. In the New Testament 1John 1:1: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." So as you can see the prayer shawl is the covering which represents Jesus, and the Tzizit is the WORD of GOD which represents Jesus also. The Jews did not fully understand the concept of why they were keeping this commandment, but they did understand that this represented God. To Christians the prayer shawl is a reminder that when we go before the father we no longer have to go behind the veil. We now have the liberty to go before God with our covering and the Word of God both through Jesus Christ.
